Dear Colleagues,
The infections of the Bones and the Joints, with or without implants, together with those of the soft tissues, are diagnosed with an increasing incidence and severity world-wide, as septic complications following Musculoskeletal Trauma and joint replacement surgery, and are projected to increase at a faster pace as an emerging epidemic. Musculoskeletal infections - MSIs are devastating adverse events that may become life-threatening conditions. In our daily Orthopaedic routine we are invited together with allied specialists, to treat patients with increasing numbers of invasive implant procedures, in an ageing population with comorbidity and more immunocompromised patients, frequently in an environment that is rich in pathogens that are transported between hospitals. Not infrequently the emergence and spread of multi-drug-resistant bacteria and nosocomial infections, increase morbidity and mortality rates, long-lasting disability, or even permanent handicap, with the inevitable social and economic burdens.
The World Association for Infections in Orthopaedics and Traumatology - WAIOT invites the scientific community of all stake holding specialists to take a more active role, to draw the attention of the decision making bodies, and of the public ,to the plight of hundreds of thousands of people across the globe who experience these complications, become disabled, and, in some cases, die from these devastating infections.
To mitigate the pain, the suffering and the adverse personal, clinical, and socioeconomic effects of these conditions, decisive steps are required to improve accessibility to the appropriate health care services, for early detection, and comprehensive management. An action plan for Increased financial resources, together with targeted and well co-ordinated research efforts supported by both governments, funding organisations and the professional societies should be put in place to bring the MSIs higher in the agenda of the global healthcare priorities.
The 1st WAIOT congress is going to be the FORUM with delegations from all continents, to voice these efforts and strengthen the co-ordination towards this direction.
