11. Asia Pacific Stroke Congress

Stroke is a major cause of disability and death in Asia, in some Asian countries it is the leading cause of death. A large proportion of stroke occurs in young people in this continent. In addition, there are variations in epidemiology, mechanisms, and access to stroke care in Asia. In most of the countries stroke care infrastructure is developed mainly in private hospitals but most public hospitals are ill-equipped to treat stroke patients. The treatment expenses are borne by the patients and relatives and hence there is a huge economic burden on the family.

The current COVID Pandemic has affected the stroke continuum of care in Asia. The challenges due to COVID-19 which itself can lead to stroke and the complications of vaccine (cerebral venous sinus thrombosis) pose additional burden on the fragmented health care system. The XIth Asia Pacific Stroke Congress (APSC) will be held from December 9th to 11th in Chennai. This will be a virtual conference and the theme is “Stroke Care in Challenging times”.

On behalf of Indian Stroke Association, I welcome you all for this virtual conference. The Congress will provide a cutting edge educational and scientific experience, focusing on the latest developments in acute management, rehabilitation, and long-term care. There will be a particular emphasis on the issues related to stroke care in the Asian region. We have special sessions for addressing stroke care in less represented countries from Asia.
