Dear Friends and Colleagues,
In view of the uncertain situation with COVID-19 affecting many countries in Asia and Oceania, ILAE and IBE have made the difficult decision to stage the 13th Asian & Oceanian Epilepsy Congress (AOEC) as a virtual congress still on the same dates in 2021, 10-13 June.
Unfortunately this means that we won’t be able to meet in Fukuoka in June but having considered the situation with COVID-19 in Asia, Oceania and beyond, a virtual congress guarantees the health and safety of all participants which is our highest priority and indeed may be a better opportunity to acquire the latest achievements and share research results with each other in the field of epilepsy without traveling abroad. We realize that this is disappointing, not least to our colleagues in the Scientific Organising and local Committees who have made a tremendous effort in preparing for the congress.
We are currently reviewing the scientific programme to make it more suitable for a virtual platform and are ensuring that virtual networking events will allow you to still engage with the epilepsy community. The abstract submission deadline can now be extended to March 2021 and abstracts will be considered for e-poster or platform presentation instead. Revised registration fees will shortly be announced and there will be plenty of bursaries too ensuring that anyone who wants to join this unrivalled epilepsy congress from across the region can.
On behalf of the 13th AOEC Scientific Organising Committee, we thank you for your understanding; more information will be provided in the coming weeks so please do check the congress website regularly. We sincerely hope to welcome each of you online to the 13th AOEC where you will experience an interactive and highly educational congress like never before. Your active participation will make this virtual AOEC a successful one and most importantly enhance epilepsy care, research and regional co-operation among the countries of Asia and Oceania.
